Innovate to Differentiate

Innovate to Differentiate...

How to claim your place – EVERYTIME!

When I first began speaking I was told to watch the successful speakers, the ones who had made it and emulate them. The meaning of emulate is to copy or imitate what they are doing.

What those very well-intentioned people were really telling me was to watch (not copy) those who were successful, and see what was working. That is great advice. We can learn a lot from those who have gone before us. That said, to try and emulate those who are the standard requires the ability to discern key elements.

Consider this. When you observe someone in your industry who is viewed as the standard what you are seeing is the finished, polished product not all the hard work. Not the grit and determination that all who are successful must go through to arrive.

When new in the marketplace it’s important to look for those who are setting the standard, the industry leaders. This applies to all areas of business.

I took the advice to watch and emulate those who were successful literally. Ha! BIG MISTAKE!

During that time Tony Robbins was the gold standard. I remember looking at Tony Robbins on stage and thinking, “Are you kidding? YIKES.”  Not because I had any issue with either his delivery or his message – not at all. Yet, there were several reasons why me trying to emulate Tony Robbins was a bit like a featherweight boxer attempting to emulate a heavyweight.

Here are 3 key points I grappled with.

1. Tony Robbins is a giant by his size alone. He commands attention, stage or no stage, with his physical presence.

I am 5 feet tall and often require a stage to be seen.

2. Tony Robin’s voice booms due to several factors. The most obvious being his larger than life personality.

Although I can hold my own in the personality department, my voice is softer.

3. Physical differences aside, Tony Robbins has been successful because he is unapologetically himself and although he, too, had to find his voice and position in the marketplace, he remains an icon because he walks his talk and remains consistent in his delivery and message.

What I quickly learned was that in order for me to work with and serve those I was intended to, I had to find my own voice and do the work. The point is keep your eyes open and mind developing to find your own unique voice. This becomes your brand. To simply replicate is to become a copy cat! Instead, lead the way by innovating the marketplace with your own unique brand of YOU!

To this day I love watching the icons deliver, and I am always inspired to raise the bar. I am dedicated to being the best I can be, so I invest in myself. I know that when I am committed to doing the work, I am a sure thing. The best investment I can make is in myself, so that I can deliver the best I have to offer.
